The rules of the list

A dish can only be claimed once

So the list you read the night before is the menu you get.

Too slow? You'll see someone just took it.
Add your own dish and it's yours.
Sides and desserts can take several people.
A dropout's dish reopens, and you're told which.
Two people bring chips anyway? The list shows both.

How it works

A holiday potluck buffet. One guest holds a plate of green beans, sweet potatoes and stuffing while another, in a red apron, ladles gravy, beside dishes of stuffing, sweet potatoes and mashed potatoes on the counter.

Guests say Going or Maybe, then claim a dish or add theirs.

Questions people ask

No. The host needs a free account to make the event. Guests answer from the invite link with their name, and once they've said Going or Maybe they can claim a dish or add their own.

Not for the same row. A dish is claimed once. If someone grabs it first, the second person sees it's taken. Two people can still both add chips, but they'll see the first one on the list.

Yes. Open a dish to several people and it lists everyone bringing one.

Yes. Switch the list to Hosts only and write the menu yourself, so guests claim from it but can't add to it. Or assign each guest a dish privately and send them all out at once.

Their dishes go back on the list as open, and the hosts are told which ones.

Hosts always can. Guests can too, unless you've hidden the guest list or the person is attending privately. Then the dish just says A guest.
