Accessibility

Most of Joinue meets the standard we build to (WCAG 2.2, level AA). Some of it does not yet. Rather than tell you we are there, the real list is further down this page.

Nobody has audited us from the outside. One person builds Joinue, and so far that person is the one checking. When that changes, this page will say who checked and when.

Bigger text

Turn text up on your phone and Joinue comes with it. You can also set a size just for Joinue, and if your phone is set bigger than that, your phone wins. Everything grows together, including the small print, which is usually the part that gets left behind.

Less motion

Turn on Reduce Motion and things stop sliding and fading. There is a separate switch inside Joinue if you want it calm here and not everywhere else.

Colors you can actually read

Every piece of text is checked against every background it can land on, in all 18 themes. Picking a look you like never costs you legible text.

Buttons you can hit

Controls are sized so you do not have to aim. A small one gets a bigger invisible area around it, and two that sit close enough to swallow each other get moved apart.

You never have to use the map

Explore puts places on a map, which only helps if you can see it. The same venues, events and Regulars are all there as plain lists.

Dark or light

Joinue follows whichever your phone is set to, and you can override it. Both are held to the same standard, and so is every other theme.

If you use a screen reader, start here. This is the blunt list.

• Screen readers hit dead ends. Parts of Joinue are built out of pieces that look like buttons but are not announced as buttons, so a screen reader may skip them or not tell you they do anything. A few cannot be reached by keyboard at all. This is the worst of it, and it is what we are fixing first.
• Some fields do not say what they are for. The label is sitting right there on screen, but it is not wired to the box, so a screen reader may not read the two together.
• Videos have no captions. We do not make them, and there is no way for the person posting to add them.
• Photos often have no description. We cannot describe someone else’s photo for them, and captions are optional, so plenty of photos arrive with nothing to read.
• A few buttons in the optional themes are hard to read. On some colored buttons, in some themes, the text does not stand out enough from what is behind it. The default look is fine, and ordinary text is fine everywhere.
• You cannot reorder a list by keyboard. Packing lists and to-do lists reorder by dragging, and there is no keyboard way to do it yet. Adding an item, checking it off and deleting it all work fine.

If something stopped you, we want to know, and the more specific the better. What you were trying to do, what page you were on, and what you use to get around (VoiceOver, keyboard only, a magnifier).

Email info@joinue.com. We will answer within five business days. If the fix is going to take longer than that, we will say so, and tell you whether there is another way to do the thing in the meantime.

Some of it is automatic. Contrast, text sizes and button sizes are checked every time we change anything, and a failure stops the change from going out. The rest we check by hand, on Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge, with VoiceOver on iPhone and Mac and TalkBack on Android. The iPhone app is this same site in a wrapper, so your phone’s settings work the same in both.

When something on the list above gets fixed, it comes off the list.
