I'm Marc, and that's Indy. The idea for Joinue started as a selfish little wish when I lived in Boston: one list of every comedy open mic in town, so I could reliably find a place to go bomb for five minutes any night of the week. I was tired of consulting outdated lists or asking the one community elder who kept a handwritten copy.
Then, in 2022, my wife and I moved to Tucson, and the same problem popped up again. Open mic comedy, trivia, karaoke, live music, all scattered across a dozen sites that were half out of date. My take was that making new friends is hard enough, and making plans shouldn't take a research project on top of that. Indy just wanted to sing "Who Let the Dogs Out" somewhere nearby.
Back in the day I spent years in social media analytics, on the sales side, watching brands pay to scour public social posts to figure out what people wanted. To my knowledge the work was all above board, but it still made clear that these platforms were fine with packaging people's thoughts and opinions to sell to advertisers. Worse, the users got nothing back for what was essentially participating in a giant free focus group. All of this while being locked into a product that kept getting worse.
So I started something different. Joinue helps you find something to do and get your people there, then leave you to it. If you ever feel like you are the product instead of the customer, then I've done something wrong. Indy, being the sheepdog he is, loved the idea of bringing people together. He supervised the entire build, maintained good morale, and remains very proud of his work.
